Video Wednesday:The Columbus Letter

The Columbus Letter from Joseph Valentinetti on Vimeo.

I was Columbus

I was Columbus &
she was America
unimagined gut believable
lying in the path of
the promise of the orient.
How could I know with
my sail so set that this
new fate was brighter.
How could I know with
my yard so strung that this
new fate was meant to be.

After all, I was Columbus.

I was Columbus &
she was America
unlimited and vast.
Vast enough to take
time upon time and
still she gleamed
clean in the sun.
Always something new
she’d oblate from her hands
a priestess for
a common man.

Still. I was Columbus.

I was Columbus &
she was America
unknown but still inhabited.
By savages who
somehow more civilized than I
left her untouched
in her depths and
scar-less in her heart.

But, I was Columbus.

And it was being
a dark-haired savior
from another land
to watch her heart
glow star-bright in
her chest and her
breasts burn hot as coals.
And it was being
dream and dreamer in one
as hope became the present
and the future took
care of itself.

Yes. I was Columbus.

I was Columbus &
she was America.
A vision in the
dream of Augustine
stationed beyond the
wide sea and
while she spoke of
love and passion
I dreamt yet of
riches and second chances.

For I was Columbus.

I was Columbus &
she was America
untried but not unwilling.
Willing to sing like
a harp strung with
the wing. To go with
me like water goes
with gravity. To
remember like Sequoia
looking out on the sea.
To love like the
rain on the wheat.

I was Columbus &
she was America
the grandest dream
I never had.
But how could I know with
my yard so strung and
how could I know with
my sail so set?
